About KŪLIA

A plan, a promise, and a way to keep score.

KŪLIA is a Hawaiʻi nonprofit in formation. Here is what we intend to accomplish in our first three years, and the measures we want to be judged by.

Our name and our mark

Kūlia — to strive, to stand, to aspire.

The mark carries the things the organization is built on: a wave for the ocean that shapes life in these islands, sweeping lines of swell and sand, and the full island chain — because this mission does not belong to one island.

KŪLIA exists to create opportunity for Hawaiʻi’s youth through beach volleyball, surfing and ocean sports, with a special commitment to young people and communities facing financial or social barriers to participation.

Our first three years

Create. Build. Expand.

A deliberate sequence — stand the organization up, prove the model works, then scale it across the islands.

01

Year One

Create

Establish the nonprofit, build partnerships, raise initial funding and begin community programming.

Priorities

  • Complete nonprofit formation
  • Pursue 501(c)(3) recognition
  • Establish Board governance
  • Launch donor and sponsorship programs
  • Hold free youth clinics
  • Establish the Athlete Opportunity Fund
  • Identify high-need court locations
  • Begin conversations with schools about beach volleyball
  • Fund the first qualifying athlete opportunities
02

Year Two

Build

Expand programming and begin demonstrating measurable community impact.

Priorities

  • Increase free and subsidized clinics
  • Support more beach and surf athletes
  • Establish school partnerships
  • Develop youth competitions
  • Expand inter-island participation
  • Secure larger grants and sponsors
  • Complete or substantially support an initial court-improvement project
03

Year Three

Expand

Begin scaling the KŪLIA model across Hawaiʻi.

Priorities

  • Develop additional court projects
  • Expand into additional islands and communities
  • Increase scholarship and travel funding
  • Build stronger school-based programs
  • Develop inter-school competition opportunities
  • Establish long-term government, education and community partnerships
  • Create a sustainable statewide strategy for youth beach volleyball

How we will measure success

Success will not be measured simply by how much money we raise.

These are the numbers KŪLIA intends to publish and be held to as programs come online.

  • Young people introduced to beach and surf sports
  • Free or subsidized training hours
  • Athletes receiving financial assistance
  • Competition opportunities funded
  • Inter-island and mainland opportunities supported
  • Schools participating
  • Coaches and mentors involved
  • Courts built, restored or improved
  • Communities served
  • Volunteer hours
  • Beach stewardship projects
  • Athletes progressing to high-school and collegiate opportunities
  • Former participants returning to serve younger athletes

Governance & accountability

Built to be trusted with someone else’s generosity.

01

Board governance

KŪLIA is establishing Board governance as a Year One priority, with defined roles and oversight of programs and spending.

02

Written eligibility standards

Athlete assistance is governed by objective, mission-based eligibility standards adopted in writing rather than case-by-case discretion.

03

Financial & conflict controls

Financial controls and conflict-of-interest procedures govern how assistance is approved and how funds are handled.

KŪLIA will strive to use every court built, every clinic held, every partnership formed and every dollar donated to create meaningful opportunity for young people.
