What we do

Five pillars. One pathway.

Every KŪLIA program traces back to one of five commitments — from pouring sand into a new court to putting a qualified athlete on a plane.

1

Build the Courts

KŪLIA will work with schools, communities, government agencies, landowners, businesses and charitable partners to develop, restore and improve beach-volleyball courts throughout Hawaiʻi.

Court Projects

Priority will be placed on projects that provide significant public benefit, particularly in communities with limited recreational resources.

Every project must respect environmental conditions, cultural significance, community input and applicable government requirements.

Potential locations

  • Public parks
  • Appropriate beach areas
  • High schools
  • Middle schools
  • Community recreation areas
  • Existing facilities needing restoration

We aren’t simply building courts. We are building places where opportunity begins.

2

Grow the Game

One of KŪLIA’s defining long-term objectives is to help expand beach volleyball into a broadly accessible high-school sport throughout Hawaiʻi.

A student should be able to discover beach volleyball in their own community and see a genuine future in the sport.

KŪLIA will work to

  • Introduce beach volleyball to students
  • Support school clinics
  • Help establish developmental programs
  • Support coaches and volunteers
  • Assist schools with equipment
  • Help schools access appropriate courts
  • Organize developmental competitions
  • Build community support
  • Encourage inter-island participation
  • Support efforts toward sustainable organized high-school competition

Youth → Middle School → High School → College → Beyond

3

Create Access

KŪLIA will introduce young people to beach volleyball, surfing and responsible ocean recreation through free and donation-supported community programming.

Volunteer With Us

Families who are able to contribute may help support programming. A family’s inability to donate should not automatically prevent an eligible child from participating.

Programs may include

  • Beach volleyball clinics
  • Surf clinics
  • Ocean-awareness education
  • Water safety
  • Athletic development
  • Mentorship
  • Beach cleanups
  • Environmental education
  • Leadership development
  • Community service
4

Fund the Opportunity

Getting an athlete onto a court or surfboard is only the beginning. When qualified young athletes earn meaningful competitive opportunities but financial barriers stand in their way, KŪLIA will seek to help.

The Athlete Fund

Through the KŪLIA Athlete Opportunity Fund, eligible athletes may receive full or partial assistance for Board-approved expenses.

Financial assistance will be governed by written eligibility standards, financial controls and conflict-of-interest procedures.

Board-approved expenses may include

  • Tournament entry fees
  • Surf competition fees
  • Inter-island airfare
  • Mainland airfare
  • Lodging
  • Ground transportation
  • Athletic-equipment transportation
  • Coaching associated with approved competition
  • Training opportunities
  • Camps and clinics
  • Required equipment
  • Reasonable competition-related meals
  • Other approved developmental expenses

We don’t only want to identify opportunity. We want to help young people reach it.

5

Develop People

Athletic achievement matters, but character matters more. Athletes who benefit from KŪLIA will be encouraged to give back through mentorship, community clinics, beach cleanups, service projects and helping younger athletes.

KŪLIA programs will encourage

  • Respect
  • Discipline
  • Compassion
  • Leadership
  • Responsibility
  • Stewardship
  • Service

Receive Opportunity → Grow → Give Back → Create Opportunity for Someone Else

Where you come in

None of this happens without people.

Coaches, landowners, schools, businesses, parents and volunteers all make these five pillars real. Tell us which one you want to help build.
